Art after Stonewall: 1969 - 1989

Patricia and Philip Frost Art Museum,
Florida International University

10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL

Program:  Art after Stonewall, honors the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and will headline the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum’s Art Basel season. This is the first national museum show of its kind to survey the impact of the LGBTQ civil rights movement on visual culture, during the pivotal two decades after the Stonewall Riots, as the first Pride marches took flight ― a bold visual history of twenty years in American queer life.

More than 200 works, including photographs, paintings, sculpture, video, music, and historical documents, will be on view across the museum’s entire second floor. The exhibition presents the work of openly LGBTQ artists alongside other artists engaged with the emerging queer subcultures, including Vito Acconci, Diane Arbus, Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois, Judy Chicago, Keith Haring, David Hockney, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Andy Warhol, among many others.

Dr. Jordana Pomeroy, Director of the Frost Art Museum, will greet the group at 10:10 and give a brief introduction. She will discuss how the exhibition originated and how it fits into the Frost Art Museum’s mission.  The tour of the exhibition will start promptly at 10:30 and will be led by Dr. Amy Galpin, Chief Curator.  Dr. Galpin will discuss some highlights of the show and how this exhibition differs from the other venues.
