PROGRAM: The photography of Johanne Rahaman presents images from the BlackFlorida Project, an archive of photographic and personal histories that document the people and everyday life of Florida’s Black communities. Depicting rural towns and inner cities spanning the entirety of the state, the project seeks to provide an alternate perspective on these marginalized communities by highlighting their richness through images of entrepreneurship, beauty, sensuality, aging, mortality, youth, and resilience.
The mission of HistoryMiami’s Center for Photography is to collect, safeguard, and share the photographic images that tell the stories of our community and illuminate the Miami experience. The Center emphasizes documentary photography and serves photographers, researchers, and our diverse public in an effort to explore who we have been, who we are, and who we may yet become as a community. Its archives include 1.5 million images as well as 3 dimensional objects related to South Florida.
