CHAKAIA BOOKER: The Observance

PROGRAM: Co-organized by Alex Gartenfeld, Artistic Director of ICA Miami, and Stephanie Seidel, Associate Curator, the exhibition will be the first examination of Chakaia Booker's work in over 10 years and the largest one to date. The exhibition introduces Booker's virtuosic practice across a number of mediums. Two series of paintings (1991-92 and 2009) see the artist expanding her vocabulary in acrylic on wood, canvas and paper. Also included are important and experimental works of bronze, ceramic, and plastic assemblage. Photographs from the series "Foundling Warrior Quest" and "Graveyard Series" are dynamic testaments to the artist's performative approach to sculpture and to her work's deep engagement with art historical traditions of landscape and portraiture. The exhibit also features a large range of Booker's sculptures, including the eponymous immersive installation "The Observance (1995)", made of deconstructed rubber tires and rubber tubes-her first work in this signature material.

COST: Entry to the museum is free.
ICA’s COVID PROTOCOL: Masks: Proper face coverings are required for all guests, ages 2 and older, and museum staff while inside the museum. Masks must adequately cover the nose and mouth at all times. No entry will be permitted without a face covering.
Vaccinated guests may remove their masks when in the Sculpture Garden but must re-mask upon reentering the building.
Follow Wayfinding Signage: Wayfinding signage is posted throughout the building to reduce exposure. Please follow the prescribed pathways.
Social Distancing: A 6-foot distance between visitors is required at all times both in the museum’s galleries and outdoors. This does not apply to families residing at the same dwelling.
