MY NAME IS MARYAN
Two Curator-led Tours
Tuesday, December 14 @ 10:30 AM and @ 1 PM
PROGRAM:
MY NAME IS MARYAN is the first exhaustive retrospective to critically examine all periods of Polish-born artist Maryan’s life and work. Maryan (bornPinchas Burstein in Nowy Sacz, Poland in 1927) was imprisoned by the Nazis and left for dead
in a mass grave. He renamed himself after the war, was sent to Israel in 1947, and studied visual arts in Jerusalem and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he regularly exhibited after 1950. He was awarded the Prix des Critiques d’Art at the Paris Biennale in 1959, and his first solo presentation in the United States was held at the famed Andre Emmerich Gallery in 1960. By 1962, Maryan had settled in New York,
where he lived and worked in the Chelsea Hotel until his death in 1977.
MOCA Curator of Education, Amanda Covach.
